UPDATED FlashArray: //X Storage Configuration Matrix V2 + NEW added //C

Last March I published an article (FlashArray: the next 3rd/generation of FlashArray //X R3 - NVMe DFMs now for X10. A useful Matrix.), which included a matrix for possible FlashArray //X configurations.


With the release of the new 24.7TB DFMc QLC modules for FlashArray //C I took the opportunity to add //C and the new modules to this matrix. With FlashArray //C with QLC one speaks of latencies between 2-4ms - in comparison FlashArray //X 1-2ms - and focuses here above all Tier-2 applications.

 

INFO: I shared a post today on Twitter & LinkedIn titled "Now Shipping - 49TB QLC SSDs in FlashArray //C". The 49TB DFMc are not yet included in Matrix in version 2 as there are no official articles on this yet. Addressed module sizes will be included in Matrix version 3 soon.

 

New DataPacks/configuration options for FA //C

If you purchase a new FlashArray //C as of today, you can choose between 5 configuration variants (RAW capacities):

  • Variant 1: Chassis 345TB (14x 24,7TB)

  • Variant 2: Chassis 494TB (20x 24,7TB)

  • Option 3: Chassis 494TB (20x 24,7TB) + Shelf 1 345TB (14x 24,7TB) = 839TB

  • Variant 4: Chassis 494TB (20x 24,7TB) + Shelf 1 691TB (28x 24,7TB) = 1185TB

  • Variant 5: Chassis 494TB (20x 24.7TB) + Shelf 1 691TB (28x 24.7TB) + Shelf 2 345TB (14x 24.7TB) = 1531TB

The original 18.3TB DFMs (TLC-based) can no longer be shipped for new configurations, but are still supported in existing systems and are purchasable for expansion.


Thus, with an assumed DR of 3:1, one achieves:

Variant 1: 740TB = 0.74PB @ 3:1 on 3 height units

Variant 5: 3521TB = 3.52PB! @ 3:1 on 9 height units


We are talking about almost unimaginable storage capacities on an extremely consolidated-tight storage system with a maximum of 9 height units. With the progress of QLC development, we can soon expect even larger capacities.


From a price perspective, FlashArray //C with 100% NVMe QLC is really extremely interesting! I myself would not have thought it possible to acquire the capacities mentioned above for this money.


The matrix shows the maximum RAW capacities of the individual controllers and the available or compatible DataPacks. The matrix also contains the SAS DataPacks for old stock systems, as well as the DirectMemoryModules/DMMs (read caching for X70/X90 based on Intel Optane StorageClassMemory) in addition to the current DirectFlashModules/DFM + Efficiency DataPacks.

Also included are the DataPacks for DirectFlashShelfs/DFS and the legacy SAS Shelfs.

IMPORTANT: the DFMc DataPacks are only supported with Purity //FA 6.0.1 or even 6.0.3.

//C and //X are still identical in operation. //C as a tier-2 target, however, already has the Purity Files (NFS/SMB-CIFS) functionalities from Purity 6 in direct comparison to //X.
